Special Issue Information
The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) is fundamentally transforming language education, offering innovative tools such as real-time conversational chatbots, automated writing feedback, adaptive learning systems, and multilingual translation. These technologies enhance personalization, accessibility, and engagement for learners across diverse proficiency levels and linguistic backgrounds. AI's integration spans domains like speech recognition, pronunciation analysis, and AI-assisted feedback, creating new pedagogical possibilities while raising critical questions about fairness, cultural sensitivity, data privacy, and academic integrity.
Central to this evolution is the need for interdisciplinary collaboration among applied linguists, educators, computer scientists, ethicists, and technologists. The concept of critical AI literacy (CAIL) emerges as a vital framework for addressing algorithmic bias, accuracy, authorship, and sociopolitical implications of AI-generated content. Empirical studies highlight that active student engagement with AI tools—rather than passive reliance—yields greater language development benefits, underscoring the importance of learner autonomy and teacher-guided scaffolding. However, challenges persist in training educators to navigate AI technologies effectively, particularly within institutional constraints.
This special issue calls for contributions examining both the opportunities and tensions of AI in language education. Submissions may explore cross-disciplinary approaches, ethical considerations, classroom-based implementations, and the interplay between human agency and automated systems. We welcome empirical, theoretical, and pedagogical work that advances responsible, equitable, and pedagogically meaningful AI integration in L2 teaching and learning.
